Nomad: Women on the move
A project by artists Elizabeth Ross (MEXICO) and Teresa Puig (SPAIN/NORWAY), Dorothea Fleiss (GERMANY/ROMANIA) and video journalist Cristina Fernández (SPAIN)
In one side, women from poor countries have to migrate to find a way of survival. They leave their land, their family their cultural roots and face a usually hard welcome in those rich promiseland nations. They serve and take care of the fragile part of the families: their children, their eldest. They are allowed to their homes to clean and water their plants, to cook and be sure the families who hire them live comfortably. They work long days and earn some money. And learn other ways and words and tastes, and acquire new habits.
In the other side, women stay alone trying to keep family and home working without the male support, as all men have migrated to the north looking for a way to survive. There are complete communities where the only men are children and the eldest who are cared by the women left behind. They clean the house, walk to get water to cook and work the lands. They re-create a different way of life, being mothers and providers at the same time. When the husband visits, they bring alien ways, and words and tastes and habits.
Women come and go, stay and grow. Women sustain the world.
We want to work on this theme through a video, photo, audio, object installation, researching in the cities we live in among the many women who are affected by migration.
Migration is creating a completely new globalized woman.
Muslim women who try to find their life inserted in a complete different environment as Norway. American, African, Eastern European women who arrived into Barcelona to find a living and turning the city into a melting pot, All the Eastern Europe women –from Romanian to Turkish, that has chosen Germany as a nurturing land. The Mexican peasant women that decide to risk and cross the river to find a completely different way of life and those who stay alone at home with no men to support. All these women who are transforming their lives and cultures are the mothers of a new humanity. Borders become obsolete, globalization has many faces, the future is unpredictable.
This project will allow us to learn more about ourselves as individual women, our own process as immigrants, as well as have a broad perspective of the globalization itself in its many faces. In particular, we will learn about the position of women immigrants in a foreign country, where such women have had to dramatically change their lives in order to find a place for them. We are willing to collaborate because we share interests and friendship, but also because it will allow us to learn a new way of solidarity among women through art.
We haven’t secured all specific venues yet, but we will show the installation in Barcelona, Spain, Sandnes, Norway, in Stuttgart, Germany, in Romania and in the Contemporary Art Museum in Morelia, Michoacán.
We all have fell in love with this project.

A self trained artist in as many disciplines as she can put her hands/intellect/body/technology on, she works from her need to produce/induce change, as a utopian guerrilla. One of her main interests lay on the multiple layers of identity, her own and the others’. She comes from clay and feels comfortable working with digital means as well as land art, performing ritual axions as well teaching, lecturing and hold
She founds and directs 5célula, an organization that links art and communities. Also founds I d e n t i d a d e s, an international residency/encounter aimed on relate art, street, environment, memory, community and politics together.
